Goerke takes second overall in Moncton

Round 8 of the Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals, held at Riverglade MX Park in Moncton, NB on Sunday under sunny skies and a temperature that reached 25°C (77°F), saw Matt Goerke record his second consecutive MX1 second overall finish. The Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha rider’s teammate, Tim Tremblay, finished the day by sealing the top ten with tenth overall.

With the series in its winding down stage, the action in Moncton proved to fast and furious on a challenging track that was hard to pass on and none of the contenders giving an inch. Goerke once again proved to be a cool customer, spending both motos in the top three, banging handlebars with archrivals Christophe Pourcel and Mike Alessi for position.

In the first moto, Goerke took his explosive YZ450F to a third place start behind holeshooter Alessi and second place Tyler Medaglia. It took the Florida native seven laps to stick a pass on a resilient Medaglia, and another six to unseat Alessi from the lead. Once in control of the pack, Goerke never looked back.

Behind him, meanwhile, Pourcel fought tooth and nail to make his way into second place from a fifth place start. Alessi had to concede that spot to the Frenchman on lap 13 of the 18-lap race. At that point the podium was sealed.

Another excellent third place start in moto two put Goerke in a good position to go for a clean sweep. Ahead of him was Alessi, who commanded another holeshot, and Dillan Epstein. Pourcel was back in sixth place. Epstein made life easy for Goerke by going down hard and taking himself out of the race on lap three.

But before Goerke even had a chance to attack Alessi, Pourcel came out of nowhere to stick a surprise pass on Goerke. Despite hounding Pourcel for the next seven laps, Goerke was unable to orchestrate a passing manoeuvre. Their blazing speed had brought them into the rear wheel of Alessi, however, who was passed by Pourcel on lap 10 and then by Goerke one lap later.

Goerke stuck with Pourcel for a few laps but with Alessi hot on his heals, Goerke’s main task was to keep the Californian behind him, secure second place, and score precious championship points. As in the first moto, once the top three had settled into place, the podium was sealed.

Goerke, who went into Round 8 with a 19-point advantage over Pourcel, kept that lead in place, however, as both he and Pourcel scored 57 points on the day. Alessi, who sits in third, is looking at a 59 points deficit on Goerke. With two rounds left on the schedule, a nail-biting end to the series is guaranteed.

Tim Tremblay, meanwhile, got caught up in the pack in the start of the first moto, which saw him in 27th place after one lap. The Drummondville, Quebec native put his head down and aggressively twisted the throttle of his YZ450F to gradually slice and dice his way into an 11th place finish. The second moto start went a bit more smoothly for Tremblay, which had him running just inside the top ten. From there, he would end up riding a lonely race in tenth place the entire moto, claiming enough points to strengthen his current eighth place position on the points scoreboard.

The Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals return to Quebec this Sunday, August 6th, for Round 9 of the series at Motocross Deschambault in Deschambault.
