Third Overall for Nicoletti at MX Tour Opener in Calgary
Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha’s Phil Nicoletti started round 1 of the Canadian Rockstar Energy Triple Crown MX Tour in Calgary, AB with an impressive 3rd overall in the 450 pro. Right there with Phil was Rockstar OTSFF rider Shawn Maffenbeier who finished the day with a 5th overall.
Despite the poor air quality in Calgary leading up to Saturday, due to the western wild fires, the Rockstar OTSFF Yamaha team pushed through in order to ensure a successful weekend.
Timed qualifying saw Shawn Maffenbeier in 2nd place while Nicoletti sat in 7th. Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha support rider Sam Gaynor qualified 11th.
Moto 1 saw Shawn starting around 5th place while Phil sat back in 8th. Both of them put their
heads down and charged all Moto long. Shawn had some issues during lap 3 when his vision was blocked coming into a dusty corner. Shawn hit the inside stake causing a small crash resulting in the loss of valuable points early on. However, he charged back hard and was very close to making a pass on Matt Georke by the end of Moto 1 and finished strong in 6th place. Phil rode very strong as well constantly pushing towards a podium spot. By the end of Moto 1 Phil was able to push into 2nd while putting pressure on Colton Facciotti.
As the gate dropped for Moto 2, Phil started in 7th while Shawn was right there with him in 8th. Both guys pushed hard and made some important passes. Phil made his way up to 2nd and Shawn settled into 5th. Phil was pushing his Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha for the lead when a small mistake cost him two positions. He regrouped and put in some really hard laps to get back into 2nd but, unfortunately, ran out of time before he could catch the leader. Shawn held a fast pace all Moto where he was racing by himself and secured 5th in Moto 2.
“I was happy with my speed all day. With some better adjustments I see myself being a podium threat all year”
– Shawn Maffenbeier
Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha’s support rider Sam Gaynor put in some impressive Motos during his first Pro National which landed him 14th overall. Sam didn’t get the starts he wanted but dug deep all day and his results show for it. Congratulations Sam on your first Pro National.
ClubMX Traders Redemption Rockstar Energy support rider, Josh Osby, secured the 250 overall and heads into round 2 with the points lead in the lites class.
